I watched part of the Blade of the Immortal Anime. So far, I'm not liking it. The music is lackluster and borderline annoying in places. The animation is very pretty, but limited in the fight scenes and I'm not crazy about the voice actors they chose. They don't sound like anyone in my head. Still, that would all be forgivable. The biggest annoyance I have with it is that they made it all emo and angsty. They took out almost all the humor and if you've ever read the manga, yes, it's about 90% drama and action, but that humor is what gave it its fun twist and made the rest of the angst and drama easier to handle.
Take for instance a scene in the first episode. Manji's younger sister Machi brings him a piece of horse manure and tells him it's a bean cake. Manji's reply is "Machi, this is horse shit." He tells her to wash her hands. In the anime, she says she will and that she'll go to bed afterwords. She leaves and Manji gives a sort of dry smile. The scene changes to her sleeping.
In the manga, she heads off and tries to wash her hands in a barrel to which Manji yells, "Not in the damn drinking water!!!" as Machi looks at the parasites she's just found in the water. "Wiggly things! One, two, three, alot!" She then goes off to play with a neighbor child and Manji, distracted by Yaobikuni takes a big bite of the horse manure, forgetting what it was.
I just... really enjoy the humor of the books and it kind of saddens me to see it completely ignored in favor of making the anime some dark and brooding thing. I don't know. I'll watch the next episode and see if I like it any better. Rin isn't in it yet and she's always kind of fun.
My advice is to read the manga, though. The art is incredible.
